Aflibercept is a prescription medication used to treat wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic macular edema (DME), and central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). It belongs to a group of medications called vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors. It works by blocking the activity of a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). This helps to decrease swelling and improve blood flow in the eye. AMD is a disease of the eye that affects people over the age of 50. It results in a loss of vision in the center of the eye. It is used to slow down the progress of the disease.
